ABOUT JRI GUNMAKER
A PERSONAL NARRATIVE
As you may know from our home page, my name is Joseph Reichert and I am the founder of Joseph Reichert, Inc., a New Mexico corporation which does business under the name of JRI Gunmaker. It will probably not surprise you to learn that I have had a lifelong interest in guns, and have spent more than a little time collecting information on their history and evolution, but have worked even harder uncovering the processes used in their manufacture.
My passion has always been for firearms, but sheer enthusiasm alone does not make a living. To make up for my wealth gap, I pursued a university education and thereafter a law degree. After practicing law for more than twenty years, I found the urge to make things to be irresistible and life at a desk uncomfortable. At that point I made a trip to Los Alamos National Laboratory, where I discovered that I might be able to secure a position in that institution’s manufacturing operations. I followed through on this opportunity and eventually secured a position in the LANL prototype machinist apprenticeship program, emerging four years later as a journeyman prototype machinist. I found the education at the laboratory to be excellent, and I still enjoy the friendships I made with the skilled tradesmen, engineers and scientists I met there.
I left Los Alamos after ten years, and did a variety of work, some of it as a legal consultant and some of it as a machinist at the University of New Mexico Department of Physics And Astronomy. As of May, 2025, I spend most of my time locating material worthy of publication, while continuing to build my own shop and conducting experiments related to the production of guns and ammunition. This website is my way of sharing the information I uncover.
